Mops, Brooms & Vacuums: Custodial Contracts in 2020
Janitors and custodians are underappreciated and undervalued workers. They go unnoticed and unrecognized while their cleaning services are often taken for granted. However, janitors are crucial for keeping vital public facilities clean and operational. And many are emerging out of the shadows to demand a fair and livable wage. In fact, janitors in Minneapolis, MN recently went on strike in February of 2016 to demand higher wages. Even more recently, in late April of 2016, janitors in Los Angeles, CA took to the streets and rallied narrowly avoiding a strike.

Janitors are a very important for not only keeping facilities clean and aesthetic, but preventing outbreaks. Amid recent outbreaks of E. coli and listeria as well as a handful of other infectious diseases, public health concerns are at the forefront. Many private as well as public facilities have begun to request comprehensive custodial services to maintain excellence in sanitation. In fact, in July of 2015, the Lansing School District in Michigan issued a 10-year contract to plan and implement a cost-effective cleaning, maintenance, and energy management service program.

Despite common assumptions that there is little money to be made in the janitorial industry, it is actually a quite lucrative industry. In fact, a recent American City & County article reported that federal, state, and local government agencies buy more than two billion dollars worth of custodial and sanitation supplies each year. The article also cited a report that projects the entire janitorial supplies and equipment industry to grow by about 2 percent each year to more than 7 billion dollars in 2019.

Cleaning is an integral part of a building's care and upkeep. It is essential for schools to be able to educate, hospitals to be able to heal, and even restrooms to be able to relieve. From winter to summer, west coast to the east, north to south, there is a wealth of bids and RFPs in the government marketplace for janitorial and custodial work. Janitors, custodians, and caretakers as well as firms that specialize in cleaning and facility maintenance must look no further than Find RFP to find opportunities of interest.
